Random Game Night: Ynglet

We all know that evergrowing Pile of Shame, right? What with all the bundles and the free games that are thrown at us (on Twitch, for example, Epic Games and the like) plus the games that we actually did buy on purpose and end up just not playing. I want to dedicate this column to giving random games a try that I have not played before.

Since I am a bit picky and cannot play everything due to motion sickness and my hand pain, I am using Playnite’s “Pick a Random Game” feature three times and will choose one to play out of these. Here are the three titles that Playnite gave me:

Ynglet

“In Ynglet, you jump, dash, slide, bounce and float your way through an abstract, effervescent sky. Melt into the reactive, dynamic soundtrack, while beautiful colors make every moment a visual treat.”

I remember having seen the screenshots before, and the game does have a unique look! It is a puzzle platformer. I do not like platformer games, though.

Diablo II: Ressurrected

“Rediscover the dark fantasy classic that defined the modern ARPG genre; fully remastered with a new class, fresh content, quality‑of‑life upgrades, and an overhauled endgame. Chain brutal skill and item synergies, rise in power, and carve through Hell’s armies with up to eight players.”

Oh, Diablo II and I have a special bond. Back then, my boyfriend (now husband) introduced me to Blizzard, basically. I did not want to get into an MMO becauseI feared it would steal too much of my time that I needed for studying for university. But I wanted to play a roleplaying game. He gifted me Diablo II then. I never got too far, though, because… well, World of Warcraft sucked me in. So would this game qualify? I never got far in the game and while I do own the Ressurrected version, I never played it much either. But I know the game already. So no. Next.

Pankapu

“Pankapu is a narrative action-platformer that takes place in the dreams of Djaha’rell, a child troubled by a tragic incident. Upgrade your skills, find new competencies, switch your Aegis in real time in order to get rid of Nightmare’s invasion”

This is a platformer and as I already said, I do not like platformer games. It looks cute, though!

Out of these three, I would only want to play Diablo II. But that would defeat the purpose of “Random Game Night”. I went with Ynglet because it sounded fascinating and had the word “puzzle” in front of “platformer”.

Maybe I should not have played it on the “chill” difficulty setting, but again, I do not like platformers and I wanted to at least give the game a fair chance! However, it was rather trivial this way. I moved my creature from rectangle to rectangle. If you stay inside the rectangle for a bit, it becomes a checkpoint, so if you fall, you start at the latest checkpoint again. It was boring, to be honest.

I can imagine that if you actually like this genre and play it on a more difficult setting, it becomes fun! What I do appreciate is the music combined with the graphics. It is colourful and the music gives it a very special vibe. Maybe a good description would be an audiovisual kaleidoscope. I did not play for too long, but as far as I could tell, this is all there is to the game.
